Fruits and vegetables are a good source of the nutrients that children need and form a part of a healthy, balanced diet. It is recommended that children – like adults- eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day. But Research shows that on average children eat only about two portions or even less.
Meritorious ELC has launched an exciting Fruit- Full program in order to motivate the kids to have fruits and vegetables regularly.
Every Wednesday ELC kids will receive a fruit/ vegetable at home time. There will be a basket at the Exit Gate, and every ELC kid will collect a fruit or vegetable to eat on the way back home. All parents are advised to encourage their children to have this fruit and talk about it. We have kept the activity at Home Time to serve two purposes:-
1. Usually, the child is hungry and tired by this time, so will hopefully be more inclined to having it at this time.
2. At Home-Time, kids are excited to go home. This excitement will be coupled with excitement to have fruit, so the positive effect will be multiplied.
The program also helps to increase awareness of the importance of eating fruits and vegetables, encouraging healthy eating habits that can be carried into later life.
Teachers believe that the program will also allow them to incorporate the concept into teaching and learning.
Depending on the season, there will be:-
• Carrots / Cucumbers
• Easy -peel citrus fruits such as oranges
All the fruits and vegetables are washed before they are handed out.
Parents are advised to include a portion of fruits or vegetables at every meal of the day including breakfast.
